Majlis. Majlis, is actually an Arabic word meaning "an assembly", which is used to describe various kinds of social gatherings be it social, religious or administrative in nations with strong linguistic and cultural ties to Islamic regions. The word is usually used in conjunction with Qasida (acceptance), which is a ritualistic payment of money made by males to elderly relatives or other people considered to be wise. In countries with significant Muslim communities, the exchange of Qasida is a customary gesture of blessing the new-born and good counsel to help in their learning and growing up.



Majlis is derived from two words which literally translate as "to sit". The Arabic word is called "mudarah" which literally means "common interest". The word" Majlis "comes from two words that mean 'to speak in a court of law" and "to participate in a council of elders". So, in our modern times, when referring to "Majlis" the Arabic word is actually derived from the words "muslim" and "common interest".

How Many Majlis? 

There is no fixed number of Majlis that must take place at any given time in any Islamic country. Different countries have their own traditions and rituals associated with Majlis and the number of participants in such events varies from time to time. When a Majlis is called for in a country where there is no traditional majlis, the leader normally calls for the gathering with the phrase "O ye people of Islam! The noble prophet Muhammad (SAW) has ordered that you all come to a common gathering and make yourselves united in front of the leader of the Islamic religion, so that we may all be guided and have our work respected."

Who comes to the Majlis? 

A person cannot be a participant in a Majlis Abu Dhabi if he or she is not a Muslim, because in this case, attendance is compulsory! If one is present in a traditional Arab gathering, the leader will welcome him or her and present them with the required attire and headdress. Then the leader will call the assembly for a regular and general discussion. It is not compulsory for the guests to stand up and make a point of speaking during the Majlis. This can be made more interesting by giving the floor to the guests to make a speech and raise a question.

Where Do I Go When Inviting Guests To My Majlis? A traditional arab style of Majlis will start with a call to prayer from the Grand Master (or Mufti). Following this, the leader of the gathering will welcome the guests and commence the gathering by asking them to sit comfortably on the dais (a round wooden seat used for discussions in the Majlis In Abu Dhabi). Then they will give a brief introduction of themselves to the gathered audience and make a few opening remarks.

What Will I Wear To My Majlis? 

Traditional arab style Majlis usually consists of a simple kameez or lehenga and sometimes a sherwanis (a salwar-kameez with a short skirt) is also worn by some. The color of the clothes worn by the guests may vary according to the theme of the Majlis Online. If it is a wedding event, the guests may wear white or bright colored outfits like bright pink, orange, red or even green. For a traditional and very special occasion like a funeral for a son, daughter, relative or friend, the guests may wear elegant attires and the most common costumes worn by women at a majlis include kurta pyjama (an outfit resembling a long three), sharara coil (a long-sleeved dress) and the all-time favorite sharara qameez (a long gown that ends at the knees).
